Walker High School to House Nike Apparel Store
WALKER, La. – Students and savvy shoppers will soon be able to purchase some of their favorite Nike name-brand apparel on the Walker High School campus, thanks to a Career & Technical Education partnership that will allow the school to establish its own Nike apparel store, ChecqueMATE.
Walker High Principal Jason St. Pierre said he expects the store to open by the end of March. He noted that students in the school’s DECA program have surveyed students on what clothing items and shoes they most prefer to determine which merchandise they will stock in the on-campus store.
“As part of this agreement, we will have marketing professionals from Nike’s think-tank organization to come to our school to teach our students about visual merchandising, how to start up a business, how to follow and set trends, and to cash in on the current market,” St. Pierre said.
Nike is providing the merchandise to the high school at approximately 40 percent below its price to commercial retailers, allowing the school’s ChecqueMATE store to sell items at a more affordable price than what is being offered in some large department stores or the Nike Outlet Store. He said the school will sell generic items, with no school logos, as well as items customized with the Walker Wildcat logo.
“We anticipate providing our customers with staple outfits they can choose from,” said Walker High School Senior Hannah Hernandez, student manager of Walker High’s school-based enterprise program, which currently includes the school’s Green & White Cookie Store, balloons and gift items. She noted that ChecqueMATE will include some of Nike’s newest summer line of merchandise.
“We’re looking forward to working with Nike professionals to help us figure out how to compete and brand ourselves. This partnership it’s definitely a benefit to our school program and our education on becoming business entrepreneurs,” Hernandez said.
Walker High School Senior Evan Bergeron, who is head of the marketing department for the school’s Green & White Cookie Store, said he’s excited about bringing a major brand name to the campus and anticipates a great response across the campus.
“Not having to go elsewhere to get top name brand clothing will be a tremendous benefit to our students, and to local residents,” he said. “Nike is a great product. It’s a known product that will give our program instant credibility,” Bergeron said.
Hernandez said the high school’s new campus expansion will help make the new store more accessible to the general public. The new campus will open up to Florida Boulevard and St. Pierre said he plans to relocate the shop to a more accessible location on campus. Hernandez said the school will also offer special promotions to campus visitors during orientation events, open house, after pep rallies and before football games and other major sporting events.
St. Pierre noted that Walker High School is one of only two high schools in the area that are declared Nike schools, meaning the schools have partnered with the name-brand apparel company to outfit the school’s athletic departments with Nike equipment and team apparel. The other school in the area is Zachary High School. St. Pierre said Nike plans to sponsor the district football game between the two schools next season. He said ChequeMATE will be open to the public on the day of that game.
